New tennis tracking system at Wimbledon

20 June 2012

Wimbledon's Official Technology Partner, IBM, will serve up a first at this year's All England Lawn Tennis Championships by providing tennis fans with new ground-breaking performance data.

In an innovative partnership, IBM will fuse their wealth of statistical data with live performance data provided by sports technology company, TRACAB, to create IBM SecondSight.

The break-through new data - captured 25 times per second - will include player speed around the court, the distance players run and the ball speed from every angle of the court.

Commenting on the break-through technology, IBM Executive, Alan Flack, said:

"IBM has always looked to promote an innovations agenda with the AELTC and we're really excited about building on our successful pilot last year to incorporate live-tracking data into this year's programme. IBM SecondSight is a tennis first and will give fans an even greater insight into the games of the world's best players."

TRACAB Chief Executive, Johan Apel commented:

"Our technology has been successfully used in Football, Cricket, Basketball and American Football and we're really delighted to have had IBM's support to develop a system for Tennis."
